Okay let's move on shall we?
A week ago I had parent teacher conferences at the girls' school. I've always enjoyed these looking and listening to what improvements our children have accomplished during the year. It gives me a better understanding on what they are doing well in & what needs to be worked on before next semester ends.
The 6 year old takes after me in being so horrible at math. The teacher said that Riley should by the snap of the fingers know all the addition facts to 10. It's kinda silly how when I was in school everything was so basic & now they are expected to do a whole lot more. Including reading in Kindergarten. Do you remember when you were Kindergarten? We didn't start learning to read or do math till 1st-2nd grade.

So the 6 year old's teacher suggested that I teach her the "Number touch points." It will help so much with counting. If you've never heard of number touch points it's a math tool. There is a specific place for each touch point, so if you try to work with your child and put touch points in different places on the numbers your child will be confused and will likely not want to work for you. The patterns on the numbers have to be followed carefully because one day they will memorize this pattern.
Each number has a dot or a dot and a circle. Say for the number two their are two dots so if your adding 6+2 then you say the number six and count the two dots on the number...7,8. Say if your adding 9+8 the eight has 4dots & 4circles. Counting clockwise you count the dot (1) then the edge of the circle (2) then follow it until your done so you'll say 9 then add the dots, 10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17. The number nine was fun when I was in school. On the 9 there are 6 dots & 3 circles. You'd start at the outer dot then count the circle all the way down so you'll have the number six so far then you go up to the 9 where it circles around. There are 3 dots two eyes and one nose so you'll continue from where you left off 6,7,8,9.
When the teacher suggested it I was shocked because not many teachers teach this & for students who really struggle it helps tremendously! The teacher & my husband thought it was strange & they've never heard of it before. I knew what the number touch was because my teacher in 2nd grade taught it to our class. And to this day I still use it. How weird/cool is that?
